Untitled Document How to Save Money on Utilities

Most homeowners realize that the expenses on utilities contribute to most of their monthly household bills. You actually can save a lot of money through your utilities if you take some necessary steps.  Here are some pointers to help you do this:

1. Identify appliances that consume the bulk of your electricity and contribute the most in creating your high electricity bill.  You can actually save hundreds of dollars annually just by enrolling in a home management load program that offer a 100-dollar savings in a year on electric utility hour rate programs.  This program will not only help you lower your electric payments but will also teach you about conserving home energy.

2. If at all possible, you should purchase appliances offering improved efficiency.  The heating system appliances are the ones that consume the majority of your electricity.  The refrigerator and the water heater also consume a good amount of energy as well.  Be sure to check these items regularly to ensure their efficiency.  A well-maintained appliance will sustain its performance and will give you it's designed use of electricity.

3. Be sure to have your furnace cleaned and tuned at least twice a year.  An inexpensive insulating cover for the water heater is another good investment and give your refrigerator coils a cleaning at least twice a year as well.  You may also set a timer for the water heater to have regular flow of electricity whenever it is in use.  You may call your utility service to check if there is a low rate offered during any specific time of the day.  Today there are energy efficient water heaters which have built-in energy saving programs to help lower your energy consumption.

4. You may also save money by lowering your heating bills.  You may set your thermostat down three degrees to make you save 3 percent on your bills. You may even save more by not using it while you are at work or you can even turn it lower during nighttime when you are asleep.  This can help you conserve electricity and save more money.  Many will add a thermostat with a built-in timer to make daily adjustments to your home temperature.

5. You can also lessen your long distance telephone calls to lower your telephone bills.  If it is a need to call a very important person, you may call during weekends and night hours. Telephone companies offer a lower rate for long distance calls during those times of the day.  The best alternative to save money is by using the Internet to communicate with your friends and relatives instead of the telephone.  Today there are many VOIP -voice over IP services to chose from.  This can prove to be very economical if you are already purchasing wide band internet service.

6. One area that many homeowners neglect is their water bills.  You may want to consider lowering your water bills in order to save money.  Always check for leaky faucets or connections.  Usually saving money in this area just takes making our family members aware of the problem.
